The Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) is one of Greece’s leading research centres, advancing scientific excellence and transforming research into innovative technologies with economic and societal impact.

Bringing together more than 1,600 researchers across five institutes, CERTH conducts cutting-edge research in areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, clean energy, Industry 4.0, transport, health, and the circular economy. The Information Technologies Institute (CERTH-ITI), the institute participating in GRAIL, is internationally recognized for its expertise in AI, robotics, computer vision, and intelligent systems, with extensive experience in coordinating and implementing European research and innovation projects.

Role in GRAIL

CERTH research activities focus on multimodal grounding, active perception, uncertainty estimation, expert routing mechanisms, and multi-scale memory architectures that enable robust perception across diverse industrial use cases. In parallel, it leads the development of an ethical safeguard layer that monitors AI-generated plans and actions at runtime, ensuring compliance with ethical principles and supporting trustworthy, explainable, and safe human–robot collaboration.

It also defines and executes the evaluation framework that will guide the iterative convergence of GRAIL technologies across the project’s use-cases while as technical coach for the intralogistics use case, it supports requirements elicitation, system integration, and collaboration between technology providers, end users, and third-party innovators, facilitating the alignment of research outcomes with industrial needs.
