The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is Germany’s national research centre for aeronautics and space, conducting research across aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation. The Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics (RM) at DLR is internationally recognised for research in robotics, mechatronics and control. Its expertise spans robot design, manipulation, interaction control, autonomous systems and robot learning, combining advanced robot hardware with methods for intelligent and adaptive behaviour. RM has a strong track record in transferring robotic technologies to industry, including lightweight robots, robot hands and cutting edge control methods.
Role in GRAIL
Through its Interactive Skill Learning (ISL) group, DLR brings expertise in learning and adapting robot skills from data and interaction — both with humans and the world — complemented by a long-standing background in robot control and physical interaction. ISL develops data-efficient learning methods that exploit robotics-specific inductive biases, such as geometric structure and uncertainty, to achieve adaptable and reliable robot behaviour. In GRAIL, DLR contributes this expertise to bridge foundation-model reasoning and physical robot execution.
